In the U.S, immigrants are the backbone of the workforce.

In the U.S., immigrants are the backbone of the workforce. We do the jobs nobody else wants to do, we work endless hours to climb the ladder, and we always persevere. Most of the time, immigrants arrive in the U.S. alone, leaving behind everything they know, but wherever you go, there’s a strong Latino community ready to welcome you with open arms. That’s one of the best qualities immigrants have — our openness and sense of community. But immigrants don’t come to the U.S. purely for their own economic interests; they come to provide for their families.

The problem immigrants frequently run into is exactly that: sending money home. Online money transfers are the most popular way to send cash back to their home country, but this method is full of problems. Immigrants work tireless hours to save up money and send it home, only to face high fees, slow transfers, no control over how their family spends the money, and uncertainty about how much their relatives actually receive. These problems are significant, and immigrants already work hard enough putting food on the table and providing for their loved ones — they deserve better. Immigrants deserve to be able to send money home simply.

The origin of OKY

Víctor Unda, a Guatemalan immigrant, lived this problem over and over — until, together with Santiago Rossi, Estuardo Figueroa, and Alex Mirón, he founded OKY to solve it.

Víctor Unda, a Guatemalan immigrant living in Miami, identified this gap and created something to solve it. Being an immigrant himself, he faced this problem on multiple occasions and realized there had to be a more effective way to send money home. That’s when he, together with Santiago Rossi, an Argentine immigrant, and Estuardo Figueroa and Alex Mirón, also Guatemalan immigrants, founded OKY, a digital app that lets people send digital vouchers to their home country to help cover their family’s expenses. But what makes OKY different from other money transfer platforms? OKY’s main difference is that instead of simply transferring money, people can send vouchers for a specific amount to specific stores offering products and services. That way, instead of sending cash, you send access to a variety of products and services your family can use.

OKY is also very easy to use. All you have to do is download the app on your phone, search for your home country, choose a store and select what you want to send, enter the recipient’s phone number, and they receive it through WhatsApp or SMS — no download required on their end! OKY’s platform offers a wide variety of products and services. You can send everything from groceries and birthday gifts to covering your family’s phone bills or medical expenses.

The main difference between OKY and other money transfer platforms, like Western Union, is that OKY is more affordable. There are no hidden fees, and OKY is very transparent about its rates. Delivery is also instant, with no waiting periods, and the relatives you send money to receive it directly, eliminating the need for intermediaries. Using OKY also lets you keep control over how the money you send home is spent — something essential when managing your finances.

Immigrants work incredibly hard, and they deserve to see that effort pay off. Thanks to OKY, managing finances from abroad becomes simpler, and they can take care of their loved ones back home efficiently and securely. Immigrants arrived in the U.S. with nothing but determination. OKY makes sure that determination reaches the people who matter most.
